The above image is a drawing that my Uncle Duncan Abernathy did for me after having seen the plans. He was gracious and thoughtful enough to take the time to draw (by hand I might add) a different concept for the design of the master bathroom.
Whats better is that he wasnt aware Jen and I were struggling with the layout of the master bathroom. While we were ok with the design at the time, we definitely were open to a different idea. In comes Duncan with what turned out to be exactly what we were looking for.
This is a copy of the most recent updated plans as of Monday showing Duncan's bathroom design on the plans. We went through it several times with our architects and confirmed that this design made the most sense compared to any of the other options that we had come up with. It wasnt that we were trying to prove it wasnt the best design, we just wanted to make sure the lack of a technical "walk in" closet made the most sense. In the end, it did.
On the right side of this picture you can see the bathroom as it was framed out yesterday. While in the process of putting the bathroom together we made a few slight changes and have two large pieces of closet, and a large master shower. Whats great about this design is it will let use the space in the bathroom well without having a lot of extra space. Another bonus of this layout is it will let us use the closet doors to help add character to the room and break up some of what was going to be a pretty simple wall in the previous layout.
This is a quick shot of the shower and toilet area. We made a last minute decision to make the east wall of the shower go all the way to the ceiling. This is going to be a nice accent wall in the shower, and will help to funnel the steam up and out of the space over the doorway where we will position the exhaust fan accordingly.
This is the north wall of the master bedroom. We will be putting two floating vanities on this wall along with a large mirror. One of the best parts of this bathroom is the natural light we are going to draw into the bathroom from the hallway. The squarish space towards the top is an opening for a custom piece of glass to be inserted. We then hightened the ceiling in the stairway to allow a third window to be placed at the same height. This will push even more light into the stairway, and hence the bathroom. I think its going to be a great look when its finished so long as we get the tile choices the way we want them.
Today they are going to be working on the underground plumbing, placing the posts for the steel beem (coming tomorrow or Friday) and tearing off the front part of the old roof (shingles only) so we can reposition the roof on the new ridge and begin the process of re-shingling the entire roof.
